Has anyone here been able to install APRSDroid to a Kindle Fire? I keep
getting "application not installed". I DO have Google Maps installed.

Thanks,
Earl

I was kinda hoping to get at least some position info from WIFI, or else be
able to manually input my position.

I've got APRSDroid installed (finally), but there doesn't seem to be any
way to input my position.

You can run APRSDroid without a GPS.

For a manual position,
Go into preferences, select 'Location Source' and choose 'Manual Position.'
Go into preferences, select 'Location Settings' and enter the lat and
lon as signed decimal degrees.

For network assisted,
Go into preferences, select 'Location Source' and choose 'Periodic
GPS/Network Position.'
Go into preferences, select 'Location Settings' and turn on 'Use network
location'

I've never used the network assisted but I use manual quite a bit when I
want to give an obscured position better than position ambiguity gives.

I'm using APRSdroid 1.1.3.

Menu-> more-> preferences-> location source

If you choose manual position, then go to location settings to enter
lat/lon, etc.

There might be a conflict with such a large jump in version. It might be
worth uninstalling the old version first before installing the latest.
It could also be the Android version. Do you know what version is on
your Kindle? I have Honeycomb 3.2

The download site has all stable versions back to 0.4. You might find
something between 0.6 and current that will work and have the needed
features.

Hi Earl,

Probably part of my problem. I have version 0.6 here, and when I try
to install the latest version, I get am error stating "application not

sorry to tune in so late, I'm on a holiday trip and can check my email
only occasionally.

Versions <1.0 are not compatible with the more recent ones and need to
be uninstalled beforehand. (This is due to a certificate change I had to
perform to be accepted by Google Market.)

Also, the Kindle seems to have trouble with the Google Maps library, see
https://github.com/ge0rg/aprsdroid/issues/34 for the APRSdroid bug
report.

I have created a hopefully fixed OSM-based version that should install
on the Fire even without Google Maps:

http://aprsdroid.org/download/builds/APRSdroid-gl-2012-04-08_osm.apk

Please see http://aprsdroid.org/osm/ for its usage instructions.

Feel free to contact me here or off-list if you have any other issues
with APRSdroid!

THAT works! I removed 0.6 and installed the OSM version, and it works just
fine -- except I can't figure out how to enter either -103 or 103W or W103
in the manual position -- my Kindle Fire has left me and is now just
outside of LANZHOU, CHINA! LOL!

I'll get there,

The lat and long are in signed degrees. There are a few online tools to
retrieve your location in various formats. This is one of them
http://f6fvy.free.fr/qthLocator/fullScreen.php

Click on your location and the popup will give you lat and long in
signed degrees as well as a couple of other formats.

Eg Boston returns:
-----
Long : -71.05614 W (-71° 3' 22'' W)
Lat : 42.36311 N (42° 21' 47'' N)
QTH locator : FN42LI
----
You would use Lon "-71.05614" and Lat "42.36311" for that location.

Give that a try when your Kindle returns from holidays

Thanks for that, Rob. Initially, I was confused over long & lat, putting
them in the wrong blanks.

However, I still can't get APRSDroid to take a - sign. Here's my position,
but that "-103" just won't go.

Tnx es 7 3
Earl

-103.22626 W (-103° 13' 35'' W)
Lat : 34.43071 N (34° 25' 51'' N)
QTH locator : DM84JK

The only thing I can think of is that you already have a value in there
and the cursor is at the beginning of the edit field
Try moving the cursor to the right end of the edit field, delete back
over anything that's there and try again. I notice you can't enter a
minus if there is already one there.

Still not doing it, the - sign won't work in that field. I tried deleting
everything in there, even tried it twice, but no - sign. I also notice the
period doesn't work in that field, either.

Tnx

That's odd. I can enter exactly one minus, only as the first character.
I can enter exactly one decimal point anywhere. I wonder if you can
enter the value into something else (eg a text editor) then copy and paste?

It might be worth reporting to Georg as a bug.

I don't own a iPad but have you considered APRS.FI ? Its configurable
