Has anybody discovered a good 2 meter data radio?

There's a market here for somebody that knows how to program and tune
up the used commercial radios.

This IC-2300H looks nice but it's a little pricey and it doesn't
appear to have the 6 pin data jack.

Thanks,

Used ft-1500 from eBay. They have a data jack and 9600baud tap.

Yaesu FT-1900 Direct descendent of one of the best APRS data/APRS radios of
all time (the FT-1500). 50+ watts 2M monobander. 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 1.6"
and CHEAP. Currently $127.00 at

Unfortunately, unlike it's predecessor, it doesn't have the 6-pin mini-DIN data
port. However, the mic jack does use a standard 6-contact RJ-13 jack that
should be easy to make up cables for.

[If you ever see an FT-1500 at swapmeets, flea markets, etc, GRAB IT. It's
incredibly compact (less than an inch thick), has the data port, puts out
50-plus watts, and is cased in a nearly indestructible CAST-aluminum clamshell
case. Another nice touch is that it has a built-in digital voltmeter that
shows the supply voltage on the main display for a few seconds when you first
turn it on. Makes for a perfect high-power ammo-box tracker with built-in
battery checker!]

Definitely something with a 6-pin mini-DIN data connector.
The FT-1500 was the last mono-band radio with a data connector.
I snapped up half a dozen when I heard they were going out
of production. The FT-7900 is probably the lowest price one
these days. However, for not much more money, you can get
the TM-V71A. It's the same body as used by the TM-D710.

For a bit more money (but worth it!) your friend could get
an FTM-400D, but it uses a 10 pin data connector. It's a
very nice radio to use. It's the one with the very deluxe
touch-sensitive colour screen.

If you are looking for a 2m radio that has easy access to RX audio, TX
audio, and PTT, the Alinco DR-135 brings all those signals out to a DB-9
connector on the back of the radio.

If the optional TNC is installed, those signals are interrupted and the
DB-9 becomes an RS-232 port to the internal TNC. But, if the TNC is not
installed, the signals you need for an external TNC are right there for
the taking.

The Yaesu Ft-2600 has a DB-9 on the rear with very similar pinout to the
DR-135.
The commercial version of the same style by Vertex-Standard also do, but
require some internal jumps be soldered to enable pin assignments.

Or this....

They are about $20 a piece, built around the new RDA
one-chip-transceiver chip (with CTCSS,DCS etc.) and deliver about 1W or
RF. Both V and U

there are versions on eBay from a few different vendors but they all
look the same.

The downside is that you need to package and power it, but it'll
probably fit in the TNC.
